![]() BBEdit was the first freestanding text editor to use the "PE" editing engine, and is the only one still being developed.īBEdit was available at no charge upon its initial release in 1992 but was commercialized in May 1993 with the release of version 2.5. At the same time, Bare Bones Software also made a less-featured version of BBEdit 2.5 called BBEdit Lite available at no cost. BBEdit Lite lacked plugin support, scriptability, syntax coloring and other features then deemed as mainly for advanced users. Bare Bones Software discontinued BBEdit Lite at version 6.1 and replaced it with TextWrangler, which was available for a fee, although significantly less than BBEdit. In 2005, TextWrangler 2.0 was released as freeware and subsequent versions continued to be distributed as such up until 2017, when it was sunsetted and incorporated into BBEdit. Throughout its history, BBEdit has supported many Apple technologies that failed to gain traction, including OpenDoc and PowerTalk. ![]() The failure of PowerTalk, and the desire of developers to have email integrated to their text editor, led to the development of Mailsmith, an email client that uses BBEdit's editor component. Formerly developed by Bare Bones as a commercial application, in 2009 Mailsmith was transferred to Stickshift Software LLC and would continue to be developed as a labor of love and released as freeware. In 1994, taking advantage of BBEdit's then-novel plugin support, third party developers started writing plug-ins to easily create and format HTML code. In fact, the developers at Bare Bones Software first learned of the existence of HTML through users inquiring about these plug-ins. BBEDIT FIND DIFFERENCES CODEīarebones later bought the rights to the plugin code from their author and included them as part of the standard BBEdit package. The tools were included as an optional palette in version 4, and were progressively more integrated, gaining their own menu in version 5.0. In version 4.5, Bare Bones introduced BBEdit Table Builder as an additional tool for web designers and developers to visually design HTML tables, then the main technique for layout control on web pages. Table Builder was removed in version 6.0, since enhancing it would involve replicating the features of existing visual HTML editors, and BBEdit was at this time bundled with Dreamweaver. BBEdit's plugin support was removed in version 9.6, in favor of the expanded selection of scripting languages available on Mac OS X.īBEdit was one of the first applications to be made available for Mac OS X, as a Carbon app.

Ī giraffe at the Wrocław Zoo and the Centennial Hall in the background In 1997, the nearby Oder River overflowed, causing the zoo to be nearly damaged by a flood. In the following years, it was expanded by 15 hectares, which allowed to increase the number of animals that the zoo could exhibit. By the end of 1948, the zoo was visited by 365,000 people. At that time, it possessed 224 animals representing 72 species, including wolves, bears, wild boars, baboons, a camel, bisons, parrots and a South American tapir. On 18 July 1948, the Wrocław zoo was ceremonially opened. He played a key role in rebuilding the ruined zoo, bringing back the animals that were taken away from the zoo as well as acquiring new ones. ![]() In 1947, Karol Łukaszewicz, who previously worked at the Kraków Zoo, was appointed the first Polish director of the zoo that was soon to be reopened. During the siege of Festung Breslau, most of the animals were killed and the remaining ones were sent to other zoos located in a number of Polish cities including Poznań, Kraków and Łódź.Īfter the Second World War, the plans to rebuild the zoo were drawn and one of the main initiators of this project was zoologist Stanisław Kulczyński from the Wrocław University of Technology. ![]() In 1927, the zoological garden reopened and operated up until 1945. The area of the former zoo was turned into a large park. The feeding of a brown fur seal at the Wrocław zooĪfter the First World War, the zoo was forced to close due to an economic crisis, and the animals had to be transferred to other zoological gardens in Germany, mostly to Berlin, Leipzig and Cologne. In the first year of its existence, the zoo was visited by approximately 67,000 people. The first visitors could see such animals as wolves, monkeys, bears and big cats. The zoo was in possession of 452 animals representing 50 species. The city authorities designated 9 hectares of land by the Oder River for the purposes of building the zoo, and on 10 July 1865, the grand opening ceremony of the new complex took place, accompanied by a fireworks display, and a military orchestra. The beginnings of the zoo date back to 1863 when the decision to establish a zoological garden in Breslau was made at the initiative of a local community. The zoo is an accredited member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA). The Wrocław Zoo is the most visited zoo in Poland and the fifth most visited zoo in Europe. In terms of the number of animal species it is the third largest zoological garden in the world. It is home to about 10,500 animals representing about 1,132 species. The zoo covers 33 hectares (82 acres) in downtown Wrocław. It is also the largest (in terms of the number of animals) zoo in Poland. It is the oldest zoo in Poland, having been opened in 1865 as the Breslau Zoological Garden while the city was part of Prussia. The Wrocław Zoological Garden, known simply as the Wrocław Zoo ( Polish: Ogród Zoologiczny we Wrocławiu), is a zoo on Wróblewskiego Street in Wrocław, Poland. The eastern façade of the main building features a pulsating mosaic of colourful glass tiles, acting as a striking signpost pointing towards the entrance in the centre. The solution the planners came up with: they integrated the buildings into a gradually ascending hill. Integrating the modern complex into its immediate surroundings, which are dominated by the 1913 Centennial Hall, a UNESCO cultural heritage site and pioneering work of modern technology and architecture, was a true urban-planning challenge. On the 12,000-m² site, a large, black, monolith-like exhibition pavilion dimensioned 160 x 60 m and featuring different theme rooms was built alongside a ship-shaped restaurant complex taking visitors on a culinary trip to explore the origin of mankind while offering a great view of the spacious gardens. ![]() However, as pufferfish are poisonous, it is necessary to remove the poisonous parts before filleting. Usually, after being killed on the spot, fish are filleted into three pieces using a method called ' sanmai oroshi.' ![]() Meanwhile, a number of old-style restaurants still stick to serving fugu dishes only in winter. In recent years, freezing and aquaculture technologies have developed, making it possible to eat fugu dishes all year around. It is partly because many fugu dishes are hot meals such as fugu nabe (hot pot) and also because it is the time when fully grown pufferfish come near the Japanese coast for spawning. The best season for pufferfish is said to be 'from aki no higan (autumnal equinox) to haru no higan (the spring equinox),' but the very best season is winter. This is because it was forbidden to eat pufferfish after the Edo period. Teppo' and 'Tetsu' were originally used as jargon. In the Kansai region, fugu is called 'teppo' (literally, a gun) or 'tetsu' for short, as the sounds for the Japanese words for "getting shot" and "being poisoned by pufferfish poison" are the same. On the other hand, the sound 'fuku' was considered lucky as it is the same as 'fuku' (good fortune).Īnother theory states that a pufferfish was wrapped in a piece of cloth and left to stand overnight before being cooked, which resulted in using the combination of Chinese characters meaning 'cloth' and 'long' that can be read as 'fuku.' The sound 'fugu' was thought to be ominous as it is reminiscent of other Japanese words, 'fuguu' (ill-fated) and 'fugu' (disabled). It is not clear how it started but there are the following theories. In Yamaguchi Prefecture and the Kyushu region, fugu dishes are sometimes called 'fuku dishes' changing the sonant 'gu' to 'ku' (this is common in the tourism industry, but generally, it is called fugu.) In Japan, many municipalities oblige cooks to have a special license for the first stage of processing. In the Kitakyushu area, Fukuoka Prefecture as well as in Yamaguchi Prefecture, which are considered the homes of pufferfish cooking, they are called 'Fuku dishes' without the sonant 'gu,' while in Osaka, they are also called 'Teppo dishes' or 'Tetsu dishes.'Īs pufferfish have poison in their internal organs (it is widely known that tiger puffer, which are recognized as an upmarket fish, have tetrodotoxin inside while trunkfish have puff toxin) it is difficult to deal with the fish. Fugu cuisine was mainly developed in Western parts of Japan such as Yamaguchi Prefecture and Osaka Prefecture, and spread all over Japan after the Pacific War. Fugu cuisine' is the collective name for a variety of dishes that use pufferfish. |
