I feel I don't have much agency in designing my team and outfitting them to up their chances of winning (perhaps this comes later after unlocking more skills, characters and items) The relationship system is an interesting idea, but it feels I have little to no control over it I miss the steady progression loop from the first game I feel it's way too slow getting from combat/events and smashing road debris for the occasional item isn't terribly engaging + Combat is still very engaging and tense + The graphical and animation improvements are very nice and retains the gloomy atmosphere of the first game Understanding that it's still early in development, here are my initial impressions (FYI, I was a huge fan of the first game): Once you have unlocked a hero's abilities, they will stay unlocked on that Profile forever.Spent a couple of hours and did a few runs.The battle-style visits will repeat until you are successful, but losing means you have to wait until the next Shrine to retry.The exposition-style visits will automatically grant you that hero's new ability.Shrines of Reflection will either give you some exposition about that hero's background or force you to play through an episode of their past in a puzzle-like combat sequence.To unlock new abilities for a hero, you must head to Shrines of Reflection with your coach and select that hero when presented with a choice.When you have more abilities for a hero, you must pick and choose which five they have equipped. While heroes start with five abilities - one for every slot - they will eventually have a total of eleven.Speaking of abilities, the way that they are unlocked is also changed. This means that a character's abilities will quite robustly dictate where they should stand in the party the Man-at-Arms is designed to be used on the front ranks, while the Plague Doctor can only use her best abilities from the back. Heroes and enemies stand in a line, with abilities only being useable and targetable with certain rank conditions satisfied. They are all very distinct characters with their own histories, abilities, and strategies in battle.Ĭombat in DD2 is very similar to the combat of its predecessor. The journey is broken up with multiple visits to various inns. Visiting the Watchtower will reveal every encounter on the map. If the chosen hero already has their abilities unlocked, you will instead earn one Mastery Point.ĭepending on your luck and your coach items, you will know a few of the upcoming encounters. You must choose one of your party members here to view a vision of their past in order to unlock their abilities. These are multi-stage battles that end in a boss fight, though it is possible to retreat after just one or two victories. The Hoarder is a merchant with much the same stock as the various inn merchants. These are identical to Resistance Encounters and occur one step away from the area's next inn. You cannot see these on the map.įield Hospitals allow you to pay for healing, as well as for removing any quirks that your heroes have. If five turns elapse, the battle will simply end with no reward given.
